Women In Business: Fran Twohey
What’s your name and your business?
My name is Fran Twohey, and my business is Nikki-Nocky-Noo – an online baby and gift boutique shop.
I know there is an important reason behind your business, are you able to share it?
I just wanted to have a go at doing something different having being a nurse all my life. I thought oh, I’ve got a chance at a second career, so I was being a little bit greedy. In thinking what I could do, I’d always wanted to pay homage to Nicola, who was our daughter, who died when she was 15. I just, somehow, came up with the idea of baby clothes shop. I don’t know how. In doing so, it was quite important for us to support some charities
Yeah that was the background around it. And then in thinking about that, that kind of made me think of some of the qualities and the kind of things we’d be selling and that kind of led me into good quality clothes and things like organic cotton and fair trade because they are the sort of beliefs that she had.
What do you love most about the work that you do?
If I’m being really honest, I love doing the shopping bit and choosing clothes. I love it when I get good feedback, when somebody is happy with the product they’ve been sent.
Favourite inspirational quote?
“Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.” – Sigmund Freud
What are your plans and ambitions for 2019?
For 2019 we have some exciting projects in the pipeline. In general, we are looking to introduce some exciting new lines and will be looking expand on our baby clothes collections.
Nice! How do you achieve a work/life balance?
Oh, your asking me? With difficulty. Because a lot of my customers are online and night. But I do try to switch off, I do a little bit of yoga, I quite like going out, and I’m not very good at achieving it actually. But I am trying to get to bed without to many mobile devices around me so that I’m not working all the time and I can only really switch off if I’m not around anything that’s electronic. I’m a bit rubbish at doing that!
What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in your business?
I would say believe in yourself and stay with it, actually because women can do it as well as anybody else can. Don’t expect to much at once and don’t be daunted when things don’t always go the way you want them to go.
Favourite breakfast food?
My favourite breakfast food has got to be smashed avocado on toast.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up? Nice question! I want to be young again!
Tea or coffee?
Instagram or Facebook?
Apple or Microsoft?
What time of day are you most productive?
How do you wind down after work?
I do kind of have a time to switch off which is at 7 o’clock and I do something different, take the dog for a walk if its light and just start doing different things – going out, seeing friends and reading!
